The Bakery

Yesterday we went to Pompeii. We saw the ruins of an ancient bakery. The guide book said that they found 81 burned loaves of bread already cut into eight sections. But the baker was not the one who burned them. The volcanic ash and lava did. Here are some photos of the brick oven and the pots they ground the wheat in. They would put the wheat into the cone shaped part of this. Can you see the square hole? A long pole fit into the hole and out the other side. This pole was attached to animals or slaves who would walk in circles around the stone mill. This made the top piece turn, grinding the wheat between it and the round piece below it. The other picture is a brick oven used to bake loaves of bread. The fire was in the area where you can see the dark square. The bread was baked in here. My mom says the best places for pizza here in Rome still use brick ovens similar to this.
